What's happening to the government solar rebate in 2021

The 2021 Australian Solar Rebate

You’ve probably noticed that some solar companies are trying to scare you into buying solar before you lose the government rebate.  Well let’s see what’s really happening…

What is called a ‘solar rebate’ is actually an up-front discount and the pricing you see in most adverts for solar systems will have that government subsidy already included (so make sure you are comparing apples with apples when shopping for the best deals).

The federal government delivers this ‘rebate’ under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) and it is based on Small-scale Technology Certificates, or STCs. The value of these certificates varies with market conditions.

The number of STCs a solar system package is eligible for depends on:

  • Solar panel capacity (not inverter capacity) e.g. 6.5KWs or 10 KWs etc.
  • Geographical location of the installation -S.E.QLD & Northern Rivers NSW is Zone 3
  • The year the system is installed

STC Value in 2021

In 2020 the STCs ranged in value between $37.25 – $39.95.  And going into 2021 it will be in the $36 range.  This shows that it is better not to delay the installation of your solar system.  As the longer you delay installing solar panels, the longer you’re confining yourself to big electricity bills.

A team member at Australian Solar Installations is available to help you calculate the best size solar system to install at your house or business and the government rebate/discount that system is eligible for.  Give us a call today on 1300 796 076
